As I meet people every day in our constituency, many of you are telling me on the doorstep that you feel life isn’t fair at the moment. You resent paying your fair share of taxes, when the really well off can find loopholes to avoid paying.

You worry about how to get your children in to a good local school when places are so scarce and many of you worry about how to pay your expensive gas and electricity bills on small incomes.

Above all you say that you are fed up with our present political system that has produced the MPs expenses and lobbying scandals, and shamed our very democracy.

The Liberal Democrats believe that we must make our country fairer, and we need a new politics that is open for everyone to see. Only this way will we start to rebuild trust. We need a fair voting system so that votes count in every part of the country, not in just a few marginal seats. MPs must be accountable to their electors, and if proved corrupt, voters should be able to get rid of them by recalling them.

None of this can be done overnight, but we have a real chance to use this election to start to rebuild trust. Future MPs must be real local champions, and completely accountable to you the electorate for every penny of public money we spend on your behalf.

As your MP, I will contract with you to have regular and frequent surgeries round the constituency; I will publish my expenses on line each month; I will keep in touch through newsletters and an annual report to you; I will have only one paid job – as your MP – and I will live in my one and only home here in Watford.
