Each month David and Jay from Watford’s Senova Dental
Studios answer your questions about all things
tooth-related.
Question: “My neighbour has a
plastic brace that he says he can take out when he eats and drinks.
He said that he only has to wear it for about 10 to 12 weeks.
I’m getting married in 4 months. What can you do for my
crooked teeth? I don’t want a brace that’s fixed to my
teeth"
Senova Replies: Such braces, known as
Inman aligners, can fix some overcrowding problems. Because you
don’t have much time until your wedding, it’s important
to find out quickly if your particular problem could be treated
with this type of aligner. You do take this type out to eat but, to
be effective quickly, you need to wear them for at least 20 hours
per day. Once the teeth are straight, a very fine wire is glued
onto the backs of the teeth to stop them returning to their old
position.
Question: “My breath is really
turning into the office joke. My colleagues say I don’t clean
my teeth, but I do! My gums bleed when I brush. Is there something
wrong with me?”
Senova Replies: You may well be
cleaning your teeth but are you doing it effectively? Healthy gums
do not bleed! Bad breath is caused by the build-up of bacteria
produced when food debris that collects around the gum margins and
between the teeth starts breaking down. This causes the gums to
become red and inflamed and hence they bleed (gingivitis). The good
news is that this is completely reversible. You should ideally be
using an electric toothbrush which takes much of the effort out of
normal brushing. But most importantly you should be cleaning
between the teeth using an inter-dental brush rather than floss.
Your hygienist should be able to show you how to do this.
Question: “I'm really
nervous about going to the dentist. Is there any way I can get
treatment without having to be sedated?"
Senova Replies: From what you say,
it’s not sedation that is the issue but rather the fact that
you are nervous about going to the dentist. If you could change the
way you feel about going to the dentist then you could remove the
need for any sedation. This nervousness can often be an anxiety
about lack of control or it may be your unconscious mind
anticipating and simply trying to protect you from ‘perceived
pain’. Although no cure can be guaranteed, this is a common
problem that can often be cured completely
