I may not be popular for what I am about to say, but those who know me will vouch for the fact that I will generally say what I think, even if politely! So here goes…
Why do some cigarette smokers think that it’s perfectly fine to flick their butts onto the ground? Do they think it is not litter? If people want to smoke that’s their prerogative but unfortunately there are some smokers who do not dispose of their butts responsibly and it makes me fume!!

Call me old fashioned but I rather like living and working in Watford and hate to see it spoiled by something so easily remedied. Cigarette filters are made of plastic and cellulose acetate which can take up to 12 years to degrade as well as containing up to 4,000 other chemicals including hydrogen, cyanide and arsenic. They are harmful to marine life, birds and the environment.

So I was pleased to read that finally sense has prevailed and Watford Borough Council successfully prosecuted a Watford woman under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 for dropping a butt in the street. To avoid this happening to you, either use one of the specially fitted public bin lids or take your smoking related litter home and let’s have pride in this here town of ours called Watford!
