CONSERVATORY RESTAURANT

at the WHITE HOUSE HOTEL

Work has been pretty hectic of late and it’s been a couple of months since I dined out. Overworked and underpaid, I’m sure you have heard that old chestnut before. So when a girlfriend rang to arrange a meal out, the Conservatory Restaurant recommended by her sounded the perfect place to catch up.

Centrally located, but in a quiet road close to the centre of Watford grandly sits the White House Hotel, one of Watford’s best-kept secrets. It boasts Conference and Function suites, the Conservatory Restaurant, refurbished en-suite rooms and no less than three car parks, which is always a bonus.

If you enjoy a bit of history then you’ll find their fact sheet “The White House History”, which accompanies every menu, an interesting read!

The à la carte menu offers traditional English cuisine including Sirloin Steak, Roasted Lamb cutlets, Pan Fried Salmon Fillet and Tuna Steak. The menu is complemented by a good wine selection from the hotel’s cellar.

It was refreshing to find the restaurant’s menu is written in plain English. The offerings may not sound grandiose or exotic, but take comfort that there will not be any unwelcome surprises - what’s described on the menu is actually what arrives under your nose!

The service reflects the style of this hotel – it was friendly and attentive. After what seemed like only a five minute wait we were presented with our Starter course – Soup of the Day. It was delicious! The main course was also promptly served.

It was not too long before I was indulging in my Sirloin of steak fit for a king and my friend was tucking in to her Duck Fillet.

Dinner was punctuated with babbles of girl talk about this and that, but we both commented that the size of vegetable portions could have been a bit more generous.

It would have been a sin to miss out on Dessert, so we indulged in the Crème Brûlée which was delicately textured and absolutely tantalising to the taste buds - highly recommended.

Our bill including wine came to £65. For the price we enjoyed friendly service, good quality contemporary dishes and modern, elegant surroundings. Another real “plus” was the absence of bustle. Although the restaurant was reasonably busy, there was a quiet ambience – just a low background hubbub of chat and the occasional chink of cutlery on crockery. Throughout the evening we were able to converse comfortably without straining either our vocal chords or our ears – a true pleasure, perhaps due in large measure to the age-group of the restaurant’s clientele – generally thirty upwards.

For my money, this fact alone makes it ideal as the place to choose when meeting friends, having a quiet evening with a loved-one or for business entertaining.

The White House Hotel and restaurant are now taking bookings for your Christmas celebrations!

With thanks to Pauline Chung for her review.
