What the Future May Hold!
One could be forgiven for asking ‘how can under 11’s grasp such a huge subject?’
Well, my goodness, they did! Thanks in part to the superb writing by Deputy Head Dave Allen but mainly due to the outstanding acting of the able and talented drama children at Nascot Wood Junior School.
What the Future May Hold follows the lives of five children and their journey into adulthood. Mr Jenkins is the caretaker and he has the ability to sense what could happen to the children of they choose the ‘wrong’ path. The audience have the benefit of seeing the negative outcome of the children’s choices.
This is where Mrs Murphy comes in. She is the kind of teacher that everyone dreams of having! She is kind, patient and intuitive with her students. She uses strategies to steer potentially troubled children toward the ‘right’ path, such as a buddy system, mentoring and focusing on individual’s strengths.
Children are so often the subject of bad press, that it’s hard for them, and adults, not to believe it’s all hopeless. Yet the play’s rhetoric that “it’s not ‘uncool’ to be good” was couched in such a way as to give hope for the future.
There were a few stars who shone brightly because their acting was excellent, but they could not have shone without the whole cast, who worked amazingly together to bathe the audience in their glow of enthusiasm.
This play was current, topical and quite hard hitting. It should be shortened, sent on tour to all schools and viewed as part of the curriculum. Well done everyone!
