What is PAT Testing?

PAT testing involves our trained engineers testing all electrical items, using our modern specialist computerised PAT Testing equipment. It's a quick procedure. Each item does have to be unplugged for testing but that only takes a matter of minutes for each item. There is no need to turn off your electricity supply or close your office. We work co-operatively around your people and your activities.

What are Portable Appliances?

Generally, equipment that has a lead (cable) and plug and which is normally moved around or can easily be moved from place to place, eg vacuum cleaners, kettles, heaters, fans, televisions, laptops, desk lamps; and equipment that could be moved, eg photocopiers, fax machines, and desktop computers.

Why You Need PAT Testing

There are over 1000 accidents at work every year caused by failure of electrical equipment. The potential risks of not having PAT testing done periodically include:

• electrical accidents and injuries,
• fire caused by electrical failure,
• insurance declared void,
• prosecution.

Over 20 years ago legislation was passed that added risks from electricity to the 1974 Health & Safety at Work Act.

Electricity at Work Regulations 1989
All employers, self employed, landlords are required 'as maybe necessary to prevent danger, all systems shall be maintained so as to prevent so far as is reasonably practicable, such danger’ or injury to their employees, customers, tenants, general public from electrical equipment in or on their premises. These regulations have been interpreted by the Institution of Electrical Engineers (I.E.E) - "the only way to prove that electrical equipment is safe is by suitably qualified people carrying out electrical inspection & testing using suitable electrical test instruments."

Health and Safety Executive Inspectors randomly visit business premises, checking that all items and the premises comply with the current Health & Safety Law. The penalty for failure to meet the required standards may be a fine of up to £20,000 for each offence or even imprisonment depending on the circumstances of the case. (See Report)
